Living in Greene County
Greene County is located in the southwestern-most corner of Pennsylvania. It lies on the famed Mason-Dixon Line and offers easy access via I-79 to the nearby cities of Pittsburgh, PA, to the north and Morgantown, WV, to the south.
Formed in 1796, Greene County was built on mining and agriculture, particularly wool production. Mining has continued to be a major contributor to both local employment and the state’s economy. Higher education is another pillar of Greene County’s offerings, most notably Waynesburg University. Located in the county seat of Waynesburg, the university is a private institution offering undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees to over 2,300 students.
Because of Pennsylvania’s unique civic boundaries, some residents of Greene County live in cities that cross the county border. This gains them access to services offered by their home city and two county entities. Greene county is served by Washington Health System, a healthcare network offering an array of services, including emergency care.
